Nihilum is a post-apocalyptic role play that welcomes
players of all skill levels, set in the fictional
city of Fas after a meteor’s impact has wiped out
the vast majority of the human population. The
emphasis here is what happens in character, not
what we plan out of character; we want to encourage
character development and push the apocalypse survivors
to their limits with a harsh, unforgiving environment.
Will your character keep faith in his humanity, or

Rules
Like most sites, we have a vague ‘three strikes’ system here at Nihilum. Breaking a rule for the first time will get you a warning. The second will get you further warnings and perhaps suspension or removing your ability to post IC or OOC. If you continue to break the rules, you’ll be banned. Certain offences may be dealt with differently depending on the circumstances or how serious the offences are.
Please be aware that rules are here for the benefit of the members and to keep everything happy and friendly – we want to maintain a chilled and welcoming atmosphere and we won’t tolerate players who can’t behave themselves.
General
Use common sense. Godmoding, powerplaying, metaplaying, imping and all of the usual rping baddies are forbidden.
Have respect for your fellow role players; we want to be a big happy family, not a dysfunctional one! Leave your drama llamas at the door.
Though we permit mature themes in character, please keep it in character. We don’t want a ton of profanity or anything in our OOC forums, nor the cbox. Keep it clean.
Don’t be afraid of rping with new people! We want to encourage everyone to make an effort and play with everybody rather than just sticking to your friendship groups. Be outgoing; start up a conversation, suggest a thread, anything! It really is worth it.
Characters & Accounts
We are an account-per-character role play. Make sure that you apply under your character’s first and last names (correctly capitalised) and not a username.
You may have as many characters as you can keep active, but don’t bite off more than you can chew. We reserve the right to ask you to drop characters who you aren’t actually posting with.
Everyone has flaws and so too should your character. Be realistic when making your character and try to avoid a perfect, beautiful character who knows exactly how to survive the end of the world.
When applying, we only expect somewhat detailed bullet points for each field, not novels. We want to provide you with a stimulus for future threads and allow your character to develop from there, not to force you into a concrete framework before you’ve even posted IC. However, if you naturally write a lot and in great detail, that’s fine too!
Characters may not have any pre-existing relationships here; that means that you can’t go and ask your friend to make their character your character’s girlfriend or anything like that. Just assume that everyone they once knew is dead or missing. If we manage to last for months and months, this rule is likely to change!
You may use whatever you like to represent your character (models, celebs, illustrations, symbols, scenery) as long as it is sensible (no MS Paint stick men, for example) and inkeeping with the site rules. We don’t have a face claim, but be sensible and don’t use something/someone that another player is already obviously using (you can check by glancing through the introductions thread).
Posting
We want quality, not quantity, so we don’t have a post minimum. Just be courteous and don’t respond to a long, well thought-out post with a couple of sentences.
Post scripts and excessive decorations are not allowed, but you may make use of font colours/faces so long as it remains legible. Size zero fonts are not allowed.
Correct grammar, spelling and punctuation are mandatory. We don’t care if it looks prettier to post without them or not.
You are welcome to role play in IMs or in chat rooms in addition to the forums but please be sure to document these in the board area where they took place to avoid confusion.
Closed threads are not allowed, but you may mark your thread title with attn: [name] if you want someone specific to post. This is to encourage more interaction between everyone, but do respect certain settings – if an rp is taking place in a closed room, it’s less likely that your character can just waltz right in. Please be aware that Random Events, however, can appear in any thread.
Avatars should be no bigger than 150 by 150 pixels. If they are, then you’ll be asked to remove or edit them. Signatures should not stretch the layout or be excessively tall.
Mature Themes
Violence, sex, psychological themes, sexism, racism, drugs and so on are all permitted in character, but if a thread contains a lot of mature content please mark the title with an M for mature.
This site is not here for your sexual fantasies – if we see several sex threads all from the same role player, you’ll be asked to quit it or leave. There’s more to maturity and character development than relationships and sex!
Please be mature and tasteful when handling mature themes. If you can’t handle that, don’t do it or take it to PMs.
There is no rule against killing another person’s character without their permission, but random or unjust deaths are totally unacceptable. While situations similar to plots such as a character murdering his rival of many months are permitted, any vague or poor reasons for killing someone else’s character will not be taken lightly (‘because he felt like it’ is not nearly good enough).
Activity
There is no activity requirement but do at least try to post in character once a week.
If you are going to be away or inactive, please let us know on the Away Notices thread. It is not the responsibility of the staff to keep track of you – it’s up to you to let us know or risk deletion.
Activity checks are held regularly and if you fail to post at one without having posted an away notice, your character will be deleted, archived and presumed dead. You may not rejoin as this character as it would be unrealistic for them to disappear and then reappear in this kind of IC setting.
If you do get deleted, you are welcome to rejoin as a new character.
