the end is nigh
Nihilum is a post-apocalyptic role play that welcomes
players of all skill levels, set in the fictional
city of Fas after a meteor’s impact has wiped out
the vast majority of the human population. The
emphasis here is what happens in character, not
what we plan out of character; we want to encourage
character development and push the apocalypse survivors
to their limits with a harsh, unforgiving environment.
Will your character keep faith in his humanity, or
do whatever it takes to fight for his survival?

About Nihilum
“In nature a repulsive caterpillar turns into a lovely butterfly. But with humans it is the other way around: a lovely butterfly turns into a repulsive caterpillar.”
~Anton Chekhov
We humans are at our worst when panicked, let alone when boundaries are entirely torn down. We can see it on the news after natural disasters, in the movies and on television. The simple fact is that we are not as ‘human’ as we make ourselves out to be. When it comes to the crunch, we are just as animal as any other creature on our planet but it isn’t until we’re forced into extreme situations that this savage behaviour bubbles to the surface.
Enter our apocalypse.
Such situations as awakening in a world of destruction and debris and struggling to survive would force us to develop as people, and so too will this force our characters to develop. That is the foundation of Nihilum – it is a place of character development and discovery, where we dive head first into threads with our characters leading the way. Spontaneous role play and situations where our characters surprise even their creators are at an all time low; it’s almost as though we’ve forgotten how to let our characters just write themselves.
In order to best allow the magic to happen, planning, plotting and pre-formed relationships and histories are taking a back seat. Our application form and account setup have very few fields, and all we want are lists and ideas, not finalised novels. Characters need room to breathe to reach their full potential, after all. Nihilum essentially means and stands for nothing - our characters are left with nothing in the role play and we, the role players, will return to having almost nothing too. Here, role play is simple. There are no history boards, no glamorous profiles or role play requests, there is only us, our characters and a setting.
This is role play at its simplest, where it’s up to our characters to make what they will of the situation and forge their own futures, and it’s up to us to let them.
